Great to hear from you , and I love that you mentioned David at The Versailles Century! He is a Substack treasure.

I've always been lukewarm about Lyon. I've been there a handful of times, but have never taken a deep dive. And I may never.

Wishing you the happiest of New Years for 2025!

You too! Belle et heureuse année 2025 ! 🥂Yes, I love Versailles Century ! His passion and his deep knowledge is so infectious and I love that he is chronicling “everyday” correspondence, if you can call it that…

As for Lyon, it’s like any place, no? For some it clicks and for others, not so much. My husband doesn’t love NYC , my longtime home.

Heureusement en France on a de la chance—La variété de terrain nous offre bcp d’options ❣️

LOL, this is fabulous, and I love that you mentioned my better half, Jason. Also, we both went to the gorgeous Dome bar at the Intercontinental in Lyon. I have a similar photo on my blog :)

I saw your photo—that space is pretty dramatic, no? Did you eat downstairs? We did their special menu on Christmas Eve and were a wee bit disappointed.

Jason rocks and so do you!!

We were staying at the hotel so only went for a drink. The restaurant looked very nice—sorry to hear it was disappointing. Thanks for the kind words—right back atcha!

Cher Karen,

Such an articulate and fun, first Newsletter of the Year! I’m trying to really learn and use the little phrases you share…on that note….Bonne Chance Nancy🥹. I’m saving your video till this evening during “heure heureuse” 🙃. April is finding me in Milan, I am hoping to take the train to Lyon..as I can’t come to Europe without tippy-toeing into 🇫🇷. wish me luck 🥰

Karen,

Oh how I love reading your writing! You transport us as the readers alongside you - your positive outlook and cheerfulness shine through in your words! And the photographs make me pine away to visit France! ☺️ I can’t wait to watch the video, and please do keep owning the beret! Lyon seems even more dreamier now after reading this - I'm glad you got to go to Bouchon Tupin, a place you had recommended to me.

Can't wait to hear more about the in-person women's event in France!

Bonjour Karen, I've recently discovered your newsletter--perfect timing as my husband and I will also be moving to France later this month! We've been digital nomads for the past 14 years (no home base). But now we're ready to put down some roots, and Paris has been on our radar for decades. We've visited multiple times over the years, gradually staying longer and longer, and just completed a 2-month "scouting" visit this fall. Our long-term visa came through just before Christmas, and now we're in the final stages of tidying up things back in the states.

So I'm beginning 2025 plein d'espoir et d'enthousiasme (but also with a need to drastically improve my French . . . full disclosure, I googled that last phrase.)

I wish you all the best for the coming year; perhaps we will cross paths in the City of Light!

Bonjour Larissa !

Bienvenue à notre communauté ici sur Substack, et bienvenue en France :-)

How exciting--a whole new chapter, with croissants and salty butter no less. It's great that you're already working on your French. It really will make a difference over the long term, as will the enthusiasm 😃

Bonne et belle année 2025 et bonne continuation 👏👏💕🇫🇷

See you in Paris!

I just love hearing what you’re up to. As soon as I saw the bed I thought “where in France has a bed (and pillows!) like that? Ha, no where!

Expand full comment

Thank you for being here :-)

And for the bed, I know, right? But once you get your own comforter and don’t have to share, there’s no going back haha!

Hi Karen.

Best swishes for the New Year! I like the Stevie Nicks appeal and totally get it...the desire to sing. I bought a guitar recently to learn and played with my son and American wife on Boxing Day. The highlight of my Xmas time. I made some brioche for everyone so if you need a recipe just ask! We visited Lyons in 2006...for a meal and to watch a soccer match in the Euros. We stayed in the Beaujolais area which was stunning and soaked in vineyards. Thanks for the posts and bonne année ( I think that is the correct spelling-my wife is French but I am pretty lousy....or louseé?!)

Bonne année ! Your spelling is perfect but I actually love the word you invented (lousée) haha😃 I invent words in French all the time yee haaa!

Yay to following our musical dreams 🎶Thank you for this lovely comment

Thanks for the mention, Karen. Being untrained, formally, I consider myself an enthusiast of French history, rather than an expert on it. It's kind of you to place me among the latter. As for Lyon, I've yet to go there. Your account of it is intriguing. I'm going to Lille on my next trip to France, but you've got me thinking I should go to Lyon on the one after that.

Expand full comment

You should definitely go there!! If you do, we’ll send you some things to see bc my husband is also an enthusiast!!

Thanks!

Hi David, My French wife is from Lille and I really like it. The old town is a mini Paris and walking distance from the station. As for history of France-I used to teach History-beforedoing other things and yes great to know French History but there is a lot to know!

Hi Anthony. I'm increasingly excited about Lille. I might actually make it the base for my next trip to France. And yes, there's so much to know. You could even say too much!

I want to visit Lille too!
